Special Needs

At Ridgway School we recognise that all students have individual learning needs and that some have particular needs that require special provisions to be made.

  1. Students with special learning needs are likely to

    1. be currently performing well below the National Standard for Reading, Writing, or Maths

or

  1. be working at a level considerably above that of their classroom peers in one or more learning areas

or

  1. require particular adaptations  to curriculum delivery to enable them to fully access the intended learning

or

    1. frequently exhibit behaviours which cannot be managed within our normal PB4L systems.

  1. The classroom teacher is primarily responsible for delivering appropriate learning programmes for students with special needs, and should seek support to do so if necessary

    1. In the first instance this will be provided from within the school

    2. Out of school training may be sought if necessary

  2. Students identified as having special learning needs are included in the Special Needs Register in eTAP and their progress and achievement is monitored by the Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO).

  3. An individual behaviour or learning plan may be required for some students with special needs while others will be catered for within the normal goal setting process.

  4. Strategies for supporting students with special needs will be developed to optimise the learning environment for all students

  5. Families of students with special needs are invited to take an active role in planning to meet those needs, and will be kept fully informed of progress.

  6. Where necessary, and in consultation with the student’s family, external support and/or advice will be sought to meet the student’s needs.

Identifying students with special needs

  • Assessment information and behaviour data provide the means by which students with special learning needs are identified.
