Special Needs
At Ridgway School we recognise that all students have individual learning needs and that some have particular needs that require special provisions to be made.
-
Students with special learning needs are likely to
-
be currently performing well below the National Standard for Reading, Writing, or Maths
or
-
be working at a level considerably above that of their classroom peers in one or more learning areas
or
-
require particular adaptations to curriculum delivery to enable them to fully access the intended learning
or
-
frequently exhibit behaviours which cannot be managed within our normal PB4L systems.
-
The classroom teacher is primarily responsible for delivering appropriate learning programmes for students with special needs, and should seek support to do so if necessary
-
In the first instance this will be provided from within the school
-
Out of school training may be sought if necessary
-
Students identified as having special learning needs are included in the Special Needs Register in eTAP and their progress and achievement is monitored by the Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO).
-
An individual behaviour or learning plan may be required for some students with special needs while others will be catered for within the normal goal setting process.
-
Strategies for supporting students with special needs will be developed to optimise the learning environment for all students
-
Families of students with special needs are invited to take an active role in planning to meet those needs, and will be kept fully informed of progress.
-
Where necessary, and in consultation with the student’s family, external support and/or advice will be sought to meet the student’s needs.
Identifying students with special needs
-
Assessment information and behaviour data provide the means by which students with special learning needs are identified.
