Curriculum and Achievement
RATIONALE:
Ensuring that all students achieve to their maximum potential, celebrating their culture, identity and interests, guided and supported by quality teaching, informed parents and a safe environment for learning.
DELEGATIONS:
The board delegates responsibility for the design and implementation of the Ridgway School curriculum and all assessment of student achievement to the principal.
The board retain oversight of teaching and learning and expect regular reports to the board with aggregated data and analysis of student learning progress and achievement.
GUIDELINES:
National Administration Guidelines (1) state that The board of trustees is required to foster student achievement by providing teaching and learning programmes which incorporate The National Curriculum as expressed in The New Zealand Curriculum 2007.
The board, through the principal and staff, will:

Develop and implement teaching and learning programmes:

that provide all students with opportunities to achieve success in all areas of the National Curriculum;

and reflect New Zealand’s cultural diversity and the unique position of Tikanga Maori
-
that prioritise achievement in literacy and numeracy.

Provide regular quality physical activity that develops movement skills for all students.
-
Provide opportunities for Year 7&8 students to learn about a wide range of careers.

Use a range of assessment practices to,
-
gather information to enable the progress and achievement of students to be evaluated;

firstly in literacy and numeracy, and then to
-
Learning across the curriculum related to the the needs, abilities and interests of students, the school's curriculum, and the scope of The National Curriculum as expressed in The New Zealand Curriculum.

identify students and groups of students who:
-
are not achieving;
-
are at risk of not achieving;
-
have special needs (including gifted and talented students); and
-
Identify aspects of the curriculum which require particular attention;

Consult with the school's

Māori community to develop plans and targets for improving the achievement of Māori students; and
-
community every 2 years in relation to the Health and Physical Education programme

Provide appropriate career education and guidance for all students in year 7 and year 8.

An annual budget is developed to ensure appropriate resources are available to support curriculum delivery

The school’s professional development plan and budget reflects current needs and priorities and supports delivery of the curriculum
