Ruru La Chouette

French & English bilingual class

Te Kura o Tawatawa - Ridgway School is the only school in the whole Wellington region that offers bilingual education in French and English for tamariki in Years 1 - 8. Children in Ruru La Chouette (our bilingual class) learn the NZ curriculum in French for approximately 60% of the time and learn in English for the rest. There are many opportunities for tamariki in Ruru La Chouette to learn alongside their peers in other classes and Ruru La Chouette is fully integrated into the life of Ridgway School.

Places in Ruru La Chouette are limited and acceptance into the class is based on language proficiency and meeting the enrolment criteria.

Enrolment at Tawatawa - Ridgway is governed by an enrolment scheme approved by the Ministry of Education*. Our enrolment scheme details our "home zone", and all students living in this "home zone" are entitled to enrol at the school; this entitlement does not guarantee a place in our French-English bilingual special programme, Ruru La Chouette.

For both 'in zone' and 'out of zone' enrolment applications for Ruru La Chouette please submit the enrolment application form by September of the year prior to your child starting at our school.

Applications may be accepted after this period if there are still spaces left in the programme.


Criteria for acceptance into the French Class.

FRENZ

Ruru La Chouette whānau are invited join FRENZ a parent-led association which supports New Zealand schools with French bilingual classes by supplying resources, arranging for French speaking stagieaires (voluntary teacher aides) and providing a network for bilingual whānau to belong to. FRENZ also subsidises the cost of providing extra teaching staff in Ruru La Chouette which allows numbers in the class to be kept low.

As a state school, domestic students are entitled to free enrolment and free education at Te Kura o Tawatawa - Ridgway School, including for Ruru La Chouette (French Bilingual Programme). The school does, however, request that Ruru La Chouette whānau support the work of FRENZ by becoming members and contributing a voluntary donation of $500 per child per year to cover the additional costs of providing the programme.
