About Te Kura o Tawatawa - Ridgway School

Our school is located on Mornington Rd in southern Brooklyn, midway between Wellington's south coast and the central city. The school has a beautiful setting and a large playing field with a 400m bike track running around its perimeter.  We have the most space out of any city schools, which is a huge advantage for those children who love the outdoors! 

We are ideally placed to make the most of all the advantages our capital city has to offer, while retaining a friendly, small school feeling. We have a very strong and involved school community.

We are a state co-educational full primary school, and we have approximately 200 students from Year 1 (new entrant) to Year 8. The majority come from the suburbs of Mornington, Vogeltown, Brooklyn and Kingston, with some coming from further afield. A high proportion of our children walk to school regularly. In 2019 we opened the first French-English bilingual class in Wellington and these children come from all over Wellington for a bilingual education.

We are a Positive Behaviour for Learning School emphasising positive interactions between children, including between children of different ages and between adults and children. We are also an Enviroschool promoting sustainable environmental practices and learning and in 2025 we joined the Garden to Table programme. 

Tawatawa - Ridgway offers a challenging and rewarding teaching programme with the emphasis on helping children to reach their full potential through both academic and social development.

In 2026 we started running our own technology programme for our awesome group of Year 7 & 8s.  We offer hard materials, sound and vision (movie and content creating), digital tech and engineering, and gardening/sustainability/cooking through our Garden to Table programme.  We believe we have the ability to provide the best possible education for Year 7 & 8s, with an innovative and leading technology programme as well as all the benefits of a full primary.
