          Welcome

Hello and thanks for visiting Ridgway school’s website.

Ridgway is a friendly school, with about 200 children, nestled among the Brooklyn hills in Wellington.  We’re a State co-ed, contributing school, which means we have boys and girls from Year 1 (new entrants) to Year 8 (form two).  Our school is made up of:

          A area – juniors
          B area – middle school
          C area – seniors

To find our about our school please click on the links of interest below.

          What we teach

We teach all the subjects of the national curriculum – English, Maths, Science, Social Studies, Technology, the Arts, Health, Physical Education – with many activities in Te Reo (Maori language), and a few more.  Check out ‘What’s happening – Activities’ for a list of the extra programmes running this term.

          Everyone knows everyone

Ridgway is a happy, supportive place where every child is known by name. Our size allows lots of interaction between seniors and juniors. Our flexible spaces mean we can join up for group work or keep to ourselves in our class groups.  For whole-school events we go to Vogelmorn Hall, which is just a skip away.

We get to know each other through:

Buddy reading – competent older children team with younger ones – and everyone improves

Seniors’ roles – seniors take on extra responsibilities like phone answering, being librarians, staffing road patrol and being peer mediators – to help resolve any playground conflicts

A house system – all children are rewarded with house points to build team spirit.

School wide projects which involve everyone.

Ridgway – the place to be

Ridgway is a well resourced school with:

          • a new, well stocked library, which the senior students - librarians run in the lunch time
          • networked computers in every classroom
          • a computer suite, where responsible children can work on individual tasks
          • large, open playing area - the lower playing field
          • two adventure playgrounds and a large outdoor sandpit
          • extra multi-purpose classroom for our after school programme

We are a small school with small class sizes allowing us to keep the number of new entrants below 20 and below 24 in the following two years.

We have heaps of children’s artwork in the classrooms and around the school, which makes it a bright and colourful place to be.

          How we keep in touch

We keep parents and caregivers up-to-date with their children’s progress, what’s happening and what’s coming up through:

          • children’s work portfolios
          • junior sharing time (a show where juniors share their work with parents)
          • school assemblies (parents welcome)
